Odisha is set for a major transformation in its transport infrastructure as the Union Ministry of Railways has approved 100 per cent central funding for the construction of 92 railway overbridges across the state. The decision, made in response to a formal request from the Odisha government, marks a significant step toward improving travel safety, road-rail integration, and regional connectivity.
Previously, the cost of such projects was shared equally between the Centre and the state, often leading to delays. With the Centre now bearing the full financial responsibility, the projects are expected to move forward with greater speed, coordination, and efficiency.
Strengthening Connectivity Across Key Districts
The 92 overbridges have been strategically distributed to ensure balanced regional development.
- Khurda leads with 35 projects, followed by Ganjam (21), Jajpur (13), and Cuttack (10).
- Bhadrak will receive three, while Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada, and Angul will each get two.
- Bargarh will have one overbridge.
This equitable allocation aims to enhance transport efficiency across both coastal and interior districts, reducing travel time, easing congestion, and improving access to industrial corridors, pilgrimage sites, and tourist destinations.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the Railway Ministry has formally conveyed its decision to fully fund the projects. Indian Railways will directly oversee construction, design, and quality assurance, ensuring uniform standards and timely completion.
These overbridges will play a vital role in reducing accidents at level crossings, easing bottlenecks in high-traffic zones, and advancing India’s broader mission of building safer, faster mobility corridors.
