Apple Watch to Alert 1 Million Users of Potential Hypertension with New AI-Powered Feature

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the company’s latest Apple Watch lineup will notify around one million users of potential hypertension, leveraging an AI-driven health monitoring feature designed to detect signs of high blood pressure.

The new hypertension notifications available on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 use advanced machine learning models to analyze heart sensor data for indicators of chronic high blood pressure.

“With our latest Apple Watch lineup, we were proud to introduce hypertension notifications, developed using large-scale machine learning models,” Cook said during Apple’s Q4 2025 earnings call on Thursday (US time). “Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for heart attack and stroke, affecting more than one billion adults worldwide, and we expect to notify more than one million users of this life-threatening condition.”

Cook emphasized that AI and machine learning remain central to Apple’s expanding suite of health and safety features, including heart rate monitoring, fall detection, and crash detection.

Often called a “silent killer,” hypertension typically shows no symptoms and frequently goes undiagnosed. Apple’s new algorithm passively analyzes heart sensor data over 30-day periods, assessing how blood vessels respond to each heartbeat. If consistent signs of high blood pressure are detected, the watch will alert the user to seek further medical evaluation.

Cook also highlighted new wellness capabilities, including sleep score, a feature designed to help users better understand and improve their sleep quality.

“We’re excited about sleep score, a simple, intuitive way to help users understand their sleep quality and discover ways to improve it. That’s something we can all benefit from,” Cook said.

Apple reported $9 billion in revenue from its wearables, home, and accessories segment for the quarter. Cook noted that the company continues to innovate across its watch lineup:

“We were excited to unlock new possibilities for users with our newest Apple Watch lineup, making the world’s most popular watch even better. That includes Apple Watch Ultra 3 with the largest display ever in an Apple Watch, improved battery life, and emergency SOS via satellite. Apple Watch Series 11 brings our users the most comprehensive set of health features yet, and Apple Watch SE 3 delivers advanced capabilities at an incredible value.”
